With Beach Fishing popular right now, these tips and tricks will provide techniques to help you successfully target your desired species this summer.
A really important part of beach fishing is reading the beach and checking out the particular structure on a given day, it’s one of the things that can really help increase your success rate when heading out to fish a surf beach.
The best practice is to assess the location and plan a strategy based on the features of the beach like white wash, gutters and sand bars. Try and position yourself on an elevated place, like a headland, a grassy headland, or perhaps walk up the beach to the top of the sand dune where you can get a bit more perspective.
Below you will find a detailed breakdown from two of Australia’s angling legends on “How to read a beach”, Roger Osbourne and "How to: Read a surf beach" Steve “Starlo” Starling.
Mastering both surf reading and safety is key to a successful and enjoyable fishing experience. By learning to read the surf, you can identify the best fishing spots, from understanding wave patterns and tides to spotting underwater features like sandbars and rip currents. Once you've found the perfect location, it’s equally important to stay safe under the sun and on the water. Wearing clothing with high UPF protection, staying hydrated, and knowing how to swim are essential, while a flotation device adds an extra layer of safety in challenging conditions. With these skills and precautions, you’ll maximize your fishing adventure while keeping both your catch and your well-being in mind.
