When winter sets in, it doesn't mean we should pack away our tackle until warmer weather returns. Despite the cooler months and inclement weather, there are still excellent fishing opportunities available. With proper clothing and strategic fishing choices, you can enjoy some thrilling winter action. Here are some of my favourite winter fishing options:

Black Bream:

In South Australia, bream fishing picks up once the first winter rains arrive, causing a drop in estuary salinity. This change signals mature bream to return to tidal creeks, rivers, and inlets before their spring spawning. Bait fishing is an option, but using lures adds excitement. Choose a light 1-3kg or 2-4kg outfit with a 1000 or 2500 size threadline reel. Flicking soft plastics, such as 65mm Squidgy Wrigglers or 65mm Bio Tough Grub plastics in bloodworm colour, on a finesse jig head with a size 2 hook, can yield great results.

Bluespot Flathead:

Winter is prime time for southern bluespot flathead along temperate coastlines. During this season, larger flathead move into shallow bays and inlets, offering exciting sport. Walking along shallow protected beaches and casting soft plastics around scattered rocks and patches of weed can be productive. Persistence is key, as flathead are ambush feeders. Use a 1-4kg Jewel rod with a Sustain FJ 2500 reel and 10lb Power Pro braid. Check your leader regularly, as flathead have raspy teeth. Recommended plastics include the 100mm Bio Tough Fish in Cracked Pepper and Pink Glitz.

King George Whiting:

Although whiting may not be a primary target for lure enthusiasts, they are still worth pursuing in winter. During this time, King George whiting school up over traditional winter tape weed and eel grass grounds. While bait fishing is common, you can also anchor, drop a berley pot, and cast small baits back into the berley trail. Fishing from a boat in 3-10m of water is typical. The recommended outfit is the same as for flathead fishing: a 1-4kg Jewel rod with a Sustain FJ 2500 reel and 10lb Power Pro braid.

Salmon:

Surf fishing for salmon is a cherished winter pastime in South Australia. Larger schools of salmon migrate along the surf coastline during the cooler months. Casting metal lures on light to medium weight surf outfits can be exhilarating. Look for schools of lit-up salmon chasing your lure, leading to an intense fight. Lightweight 9-11 foot rods rated around 4-8kg, paired with a 4000 size reel and 20lb braid, are ideal for casting 40gm metal slugs. Consider retrofitting the metals with a single inline 4/0 hook for improved landing and easier release.

Remember, winter is an excellent time to be on the water. The southern coastline offers fantastic fishing opportunities with fewer crowds. Don't miss out on the thrilling experiences that winter fishing can bring.
