My favorite fishing technique would have to be anything lure based. From fishing for freshwater species like trout, to chasing snapper in the shallows on slow jigs, to the adrenalin rush catching Kingfish on a jig or trolling offshore chasing those big blue marlins, I love and live for it all. The skill and technique involved with all types of lure-based fishing hooks me every time.
This is impossible to narrow down to one individual species but if I was it would have to be our most prominent saltwater species being the snapper. For me targeting snapper can be done in so many different ways and is so accessible as a fishery that it would have to be my favorite. Chasing those 20lber’s either in the shallows, or stray lining a bait back into a reef and feeling that familiar head nod from a big snapper……nothing better.
This would have to be hands down chasing those big blue Marlin off the coast of Whitianga. The Coromandel is such an amazing place with spectacular scenery and some of the best inshore and offshore fishing to be had.
Fishing has been an enormous part of my life for over 40 years, right from when I was little growing up in the central plateau chasing freshwater species like trout, to then working in an industry where I can share my passion for all types of fishing. Having a son that has grown up with me and sharing this passion to fish has taken us both to all parts of the pacific rim chasing game fish. Fishing is part of my DNA.
