Shaun with a Far North Pannie wrestled from the kelp.

Favourite Technique

I love all forms of fishing, but a humble strayline session is hard to beat, especially at the right time of year. Land-based stray lining from the bricks is a favorite. Exploring New Zealand’s epic coastlines and outer islands in pursuit of big resident fish is hard to beat.

Favourite Species

Snapper has got to be one of my absolute favorite species to target. The sheer size, power and age some of them get up to, demands the respect of any fisherman in my opinion. Targeting snapper in the shallows is notoriously challenging at the best of times, especially land based which is why it’s an all-time favorite species of mine.

Favourite Location

Great Barrier Island. The rugged isolated terrain with numerous secluded bays offers a bounty of marine life and is home to some of New Zealand’s finest species. Always a much-anticipated trip that never fails to awe.

Why Do You Fish?

Fishing makes me happy. It recharges me and is a great distraction to the demands of modern-day life. It soothes the soul and brings out the inner child in me. The anticipation the night before a trip will never wear off. Fishing is everything to me, I love it.
