It is difficult to pinpoint one favourite fishing technique, from casting soft baits into the shallows to spending hot summer days trolling the deep blue and everything in between. But if I had to choose one, it would be the excitement of dropping metal lures beneath spring work ups while watching the incredible scenes of gannets, whales, and dolphins all around you, putting on a show.
My favourite species would be Snapper. For me, there is nothing quite like fighting a healthy sized Snapper on light gear in the shallows, landing it, admiring the condition and size of the fish, and then releasing it back to where it came from to swim another day.
Within New Zealand my favourite fishing location would be the Far North as these are the fishing grounds I grew up knowing and whenever I get the chance to head back up to the coastlines of Winterless North, it never disappoints. But of course, there are plenty more fishing locations that are on my list to explore.
I was fortunate enough to have grown up in the Bay of Islands which started my love of fishing from the very beginning. I believe that this is the main reason as to why I continue to fish today as fishing has been a part of life from such a young age, surrounded by a family of experienced fishermen and fisherwomen and the ocean as our backyard. All this together has also given me the opportunity to pass my knowledge and passion onto my own children.
