ERIC WONG Area Sales Manager

PB Snapper caught on softbait during 2022 Lure Masters. 87.5cm 26.5lb.

Favourite Technique

I would class myself as an all rounder, following the seasons and travelling to locations that are fishing well. In winter I enjoy using bait & berley, straylining out big baits, as well as softbaiting in the shallows for big Snapper. In Spring I love chasing work ups, slow pitch jigging, casting topwater lures, as well as jigging and live baiting for Kingfish. While in Summer I spend a lot of my time dragging lures around out wide game fishing for Marlin & Tuna.

Favourite Species

This is a hard one, I love catching all fish from big Snapper, Kingfish, Marlin, Bluefin Tuna etc. But if I had to pick one, it would have to be the Kingfish purely because I love a good fight. They test your gear, your knots, and your strength. Anything from 10kg up to 30kg+, Kingfish are pure muscle and the harder you fight them, the harder they pull back. Seeing the rod bend and hearing the reel scream is like music to my ears!

Favourite Location

We are pretty spoilt for choice with one of the best fisheries in the world. The Hauraki Gulf is probably one of the places with the easiest access to fish, but the Mokohinau Islands, Little Barrier, Great Barrier Island, The Three King Islands & Hen & Chicks would be my top 5 locations for Snapper, Kingfish & Deep-Sea critters.

Why Do You Fish?

This is simple question, why do I fish? it clears my mind of the day-to-day madness. When you’re out on open water there is zero care in the world, it's just you and the open ocean. And the thrill of not know what species is going to pop up when winding in something large. It's just a perfect way to relax and forget everything else that has been on my mind.
