Singapore Shore Jigging Clinic

BACK
Singapore Shore Jigging Clinic

12th June 2022 (Saturday) | Marina Keppel Bay | 9am – 12pm

Singapore shore-anglers enthusiasts were in for a treat when SALTHEADS held their inaugural Shore Jigging Clinic on the 12th of June 2022 (Saturday) at the private jetty within Marina Keppel Bay grounds.

Excited anglers reached early to collect their goodie bags, proudly sponsored by Shimano Fishing Tackles – Southeast Asia team.

The goodie bag contained various swag such as a Shimano cap, fish measuring tape, some stickers and also a suitable size jig for participants to use during the clinic!

The clinic kicked off with the instructors Shah Muhammad and Khairul Effendie introducing themselves. Shah and Khairul are established legends and forerunners of the shore jigging scene in Singapore. With their fervent passion, they are eager to pass on their shore jigging secrets to more anglers, so more people can enjoy the fun of shore jigging.

Khairul began by explaining the basic techniques of shore jigging. First, is to check and rotate your jig depth through the water columns. By covering the top, middle and bottom column, you greatly increase your chances of getting a hit.

Shah readily demonstrated how he rotated his jig through various levels of the water column.

The 20-strong participants responded by asking many relevant questions.

Q1: What is the best color for jig?

S & K: This depends on the weather and sun.

Q2: Which tide is the most productive?

S & K: So far in my experience, 2 hours before high tide is the most productive.

Q3: Line recommendations?

S & K: An easy way to identify how much line have you dropped is to use multi-coloured line. Coloured line helps you to see that your line has touch the bottom.

Q4: Recommended places to shore jig:

1)     Beach (Blind casting): Use the Panning method (casting from left to right) to scan the fish whereabouts

2)     Water breakers: The structures around the area make it a good place to hold fish

Q5: Recommended hooks?

S & K suggest using just one assist hook to avoid tangling. In their experience, double assist hooks have always tangle at the leader.

Last but not least, Isaiah from SALTHEADS also reminded all the participants on the importance of safety (spatial awareness whenever casting) and keeping cleanliness a top priority at fishing areas.

After a thorough 1 hour theory lesson, the eager anglers were “released” to put their new knowledge to good use at the marina jetty.

The first participant catch of the day was by a young boy, who jigged up a beautiful coral trout. Encouraging hoots and appreciative back claps echoed throughout the jetty as one angler after another began to jig up different species of fish. Even a small rain at 11am did not deter the enthusiasm of the participants, who continued to fish at the jetty till 3pm.
