IRVINE, Calif. 7/07 - ICAST Show Intro -- Already proven on double digit-sized bass at Mexico’s famed Lake El Salto, Shimano offers Core - two new baitcasting reels “designed to be the ultimate lightweight reels for fishing jigs, worms and other slack line fishing situations, “states Jeremy Sweet, reel product manager for Shimano.
The ultra light weight - 6.1 ounces for the Core 100MG and 6.7 ounces for the flipping version Core 100 MGFV - is made possible by Shimano’s use of magnesium in the construction of the fame and sideplate, plus the use of A7075 aluminum for the Magnumlite spool. “While our use of magnesium provides the overall ultra light weight of the Core reels, “Sweet said, “we lessen the weight further with a drilled handle shank made from cold-forged aluminum and a Reduced Mass Variable Brake System (VBS) Hub. It all comes together in a compact design to provide a comfortable, lightweight and maneuverable fishing experience.”
Further enhancing the fishing experience and contributing to the light weight of the Core reels is the minimal thumb rest design. “We made the thumb rest as small as possible to use less material and pushed it forward to give the angler a large spool window,” explains Sweet. “This lightens the overall weight and gives anglers more line control.”
For all around fishing, the Core 100MG has a 6.2:1 gear ratio, and utilizes lightweight aluminum gears, to quickly take in slack line when using jigs and worms. The Core 100MGFV, with its 7.0:1 gear ratio, utilizes heavy-duty brass alloy gears for ‘lock-down’ drag situations. With its oversized PV Power Paddles, it is designed for flipping and pitching, and features Shimano’s Instagage II thumb bar to put the reel in gear without turning the handle. Instagage II - also featured on Shimano’s Castaic series - allows anglers to keep their casting hand in constant contact with the reel.
“With its strong brass alloy gears and oversized grips, the Core 100MGFV is perfect for moving big fish out of heavy cover,” Sweet said. “The 7.0:1 gear ratio will allow anglers to gain line on these fish quickly when they feel the strike, and allow them to set the hook before the fish can turn and bury them into the cover.”
Features common to both the Core 100MG and 100MGFV include four shielded A-RB (anti-rust) bearings for durability and corrosion resistance, an A-RB roller bearing to eliminate any handle backplay, and Shimano’s Tapered Titanium Levelwind Insert and Magnumlite spool. “By using titanium and the tapered design, we’re able to both reduce friction and line angles during the cast for increased casting distance and also make set-up much easier, even in the dark, ” notes Sweet. “The unique, lightweight spool design enables us to move the mass of spool outward, meaning the spool requires less braking force so anglers can cast smaller baits farther and with more accuracy.”
Anglers will also notice familiar Shimano casting reel features including High Efficiency Gearing (HEG), Super Stopper, Super Free, VBS that can be quickly accessed with Shimano’s Escape Hatch, Dartanium drag, a cold forged aluminum drag star and a clicking drag adjustment.
The Core 100MG will retrieve up to 26-inches of line per crank, while the Core 100MGFV will retrieve up 30-inches. Both reels can hold from 110 yards of 10-pound test, up to 90 yards of 12-pound test.
