This shifting mechanism is designed so that gearing changes are quick and easy, even when fighting a fish. The low gear ratio used for high-power retrieves is selected by pushing the button on the base of the handle. Return to the high-speed ratio by sliding the release button along the handle shank. There is no gear meshing during the shift.
An advanced way of laying line onto the spool during the retrieve. As the rotor turns, the spool moves forward quickly and then returns slowly. This prevents the coils of line on the spool from bedding in with each other and improves casting performance.
This clicker system allows the angler to adjust the amount of freespool tension while the clicker is on.
For deep water or cranking-deprived anglers, the handle shank can be extended to increase the amount of leverage that can be applied.
This oscillation system incorporates the strength of a standard system with some of the line winding performance advantages of a twospeed worm driven system. Aerowave will wrap the line onto the spool so that it does not dig into itself and reduces the chance of the line stacking at one endof the spool. The result is an extremely strong system that provides longer casts and a smoother feeling when a fish is pulling drag than a standard, longer casting ability.
This two-speed oscillation system layers the line onto the spool in a crisscross pattern that reduces line-to-line friction for longer casts. AeroWrap reels utilize a patented worm gear design to move the spool upward quickly and downward slowly to wind the line in a precise pattern, reducing friction, and giving smoother, longer casting ability.
Aerowrap II is a worm gear oscillation system with a specially designed pitch to create optimal oscillation speeds for the AR-C lip design. It provides uniform line lay and winding shape to prevent loss of energy during a cast, while providing longer casts than other oscillation systems.
Superior aircraft-grade Aluminium material. A6063 aluminium is used for its increased corrosion resistance and A7075 is used for its extremely low mass resulting in lower start-up inertia.
These stainless steel ball bearings are specially treated to drastically increase the corrosion resistance of the bearing. These bearings will last at least 10 times longer than standard stainless steel ball bearings in high salinity environments.
Through tens of thousands of casting tests and computer simulations it has been determined that this new AR-C spool lip design provides longer casting distances than a standard spool lip design while preventing backlashes and wind knots from forming. It also allows the line to flow off the spool in smaller loops during the cast which means less slap on the stripper guide. This means longer casts with less friction.
Assist Stopper is a back up anti-reverse system to the Super Stopper that consists of the traditional pawl and ratchet. Should the Super Stopper roller bearing slip due to cold weather or over-lubrication, the Assist Stopper kicks in to provide a solid hookset the instant the roller bearing begins to slip. Most of the time the angler will not even know when this feature engages, because by quickly stopping the backwards rotation of the roller bearing, the Assist Stopper greatly reduces the chance of permanent damage to the Super Stopper allowing it to continue to function as designed.
The Baitrunner Lever, providing a secondary drag system, allows an angler to feed out line in tension-controlled freespool with the bail closed. This enables the angler to feed line out, lets the fish take the bait and run, while still maintaining line control by having the bail closed. To engage the primary drag and set the hooks, simply turn the handle or flip the Baitrunner lever to the 'Baitrunner Off' position, and the fight is on.
Fine tuning of the Baitrunner Spool functionality. Both the small drag setting and the big free spool knob now work independantly. An improved user friendly handling is the result.
Barrier Gear utilises Shimano’s unrivalled experience with cold forging to create the most revolutionary gear available. This gear is surface treated in a secret proprietary process that increases durability by over 50%. Standard Barrier Gear sets are coupled with a hardened brass pinion, whereas “SW” Barrier Gear is coupled with a stainless steel pinion.
The strength and rigidity of a metal bodied reel at a significantly reduced weight. Zero corrosion, longer gear life plus stunning looks. CI4 is a material created by the interfusion of carbon and polyamide. The upshot is a reel whose precision inner workings are housed within a protective shell with all the performance advantages of metal but weighing less and therefore reducing arm fatigue whilst increasing feel and balance through the rod.
We have upgraded our Light weight carbon material CI4. Keeping light weight as it is, rigidity and durability of the material in fishing condition is highly improved. From this characteristic of the material, we are able to reduce volume and weight of the rotor and the body.
When engaged, the clicker increases the tension on freespool and activates a clicking alarm to alert you as to when a fish bites.
Reels with this feature use a handle shank that is cold forged. Cold forging allows more metal to be used and results in a much more dense construction. This means the handle will be much stronger and allows for deeper anodization.
Shimano is a world leader in cold forging processes and technology. The cold forging process creates a lightweight result with increased structural strength and more resistance to abrasion and damage.
Compact body is designed for reduced weight and improved function giving much more leverage when fighting a fish.
This drag material provides a wider range of drag settings, along with the smoothest Shimano drag performance ever.
The waterproof Digtal control system is selfenergising: it recharges with each cast and needs no battery or power source. During the intial moments of the cast, the energy generated by the rotation of the spool is stored in the Digital Control circuit board and powers the Digtal Braking System on subsequent casts.
This system uses two drag plates and one drag washer to effectively double the drag surface over traditional drag systems. On a traditional drag system, a drag plate is pressed against the drag washer to create drag. On the double drag plate system, the drag washer is suspended between two drag plates. This utilizes both sides of the drag washer and gives twice the drag surface of a single plate system.
The drilled spool system is designed for those anglers who require longer casts and can sacrifice line capacity to do so. The drilled spool system features a larger spool arbor that is cross-drilled to reduce its weight. By moving the arbor of the spool outward, the mass of the spool is closer to the rim of the spool. Like a lightweight bicycle wheel, where most of the mass lies in the tire, the majority of a drilled spool system mass lies in the arbor and the line it is spooled with.
This feature eliminates wobble during the retrieve by counter balancing the rotor to enhance sensitivity and smoothness. By using computer balancing, an approach similar to car tire balancing, we are able to redistribute the rotor weight to create smooth rotation and eliminate vibrations.
On reels with this feature, to access the VBS system, a setscrew on the handle side of the reel is loosened and the opposite sideplate rotates open. From here the VBS weights can be adjusted without having to remove the spool or any other parts of the reel, for easy, worry-free adjustment on the water.
This feature enables you to directly lubricate the inner workings of the reel without having to take it apart. A small oil-lubricated port can be found on each of the SRSystem and S-System reels which, when removed, enables you to apply manufacturer approved lubricants to the inside mechanism.
With E.I., after the anodisation process is finished, a second layer of surface treatment is added. This treatment is forced into the remaining surface impurities. This gives salt no hideout and also results in an extremely smooth-to-the-touch finish. A reel with E.I. treatment has more than double the corrosion resistance of a standard anodized reel.
The handle grip, made of a comfortable, non-slip rubber, is formed to provide maximum comfort and allows the angler to apply an incredible amount of torque when fighting a fish.
Expanding upon the same features as Fightin' Drag, Fightin' Drag II allows the angler to quickly get back to the original drag setting by utilizing a strike point on the Fightin' Drag II lever. When the lever is moved to the strike position, an audible click is heard and the lever snaps into position.
Friction is reduced between the pinion gear and the main shaft, by the use of a bearing or bush.
The key friction area on most fixed spool reels is where the spool drive shaft meets the pinion. Shimano designers have overcome this by reducing a large percentage of surface area contact and incorporating bearings on either side of the shaft. The resultant design leaves the shaft in a ‘floating’ position, considerably improving efficiency and longevity.
Building upon the successes of Fluidrive, Fluidrive II features a large master gear polished using a wrapping process, increasing the efficiency of the retrieve.
The HAGANE Body is a metal reel body with high rigidity. The body stiffness and impact resistance virtually eliminates body flexing. The result transforms the angler’s actions directly into cranking power. It’s efficiency through strength.
With amazing strength and durability, the HAGANE Gear is at the very heart of the reel. Shimano, through the application of state-of-the-art technologies, gives you the long-lasting smoothness and pleasure that you feel when you first use a reel, over and over again. No cutting work is applied to the teeth of the drive gear. Instead the entire surface is calculated in minute detail by special 3D design and then formed by Shimano’s cold forging technology. The result is assured resilience. It’s the fruit of Shimano’s inexhaustible pursuit for durability; the strength and power of forged metal continues to represent the fundamental concept of Shimano reels.
Round reels equipped with this feature allow the angler to remove the handle side sideplate and adjust the VBS brake weights without removing the spool from the reel. This allows the angler to easily adjust the amount of cast control while the line is threaded through the rod.
HEG consists of not only the gears, but also the frame, setplate, and handle-side sideplate. First we increased the size of the drive gear and the pinion gear to offer increased leverage and power. By using a one-piece frame that incorporates the setplate and adding a one-piece stamped sideplate, we have eliminated flex in the drive train that causes gears to bind under pressure. By eliminating the flex and increasing the leverage, we are able to provide incredibly high-speed retrieves and deliver an unbelievable amount of torque, all while maintaining the smooth, silent retrieve Shimano is famous for.
In any big-game reel, the heat build-up in the drag system caused by a hard-running fish will change the original drag setting. On our reels that use the Hydrothermal Drag system, graphite washers are used that provide a wide range of drag settings and low start up inertia. Graphite washers lose pressure with heat, which is better than gaining pressure with heat that could lead to the reel locking up. To compensate for this loss, we installed an oil filled cylinder that expands when heated, immediately bringing the drag back to within 10% of its original setting.
The Lo-Mass Drilled Spool System is designed for anglers who require long casts and can sacrifice line capacity to do so. The LoMass spool features a large arbor that is crossdrilled to reduce its weight. By moving the arbor of the spool outward, the mass of the spool is closer to the rim of the spool. Like a lightweight bicycle wheel, where most of the mass lies in the tire, the majority of a Lo-Mass spool lies in the arbor and the line it is spooled with.
By constructing a spool out of lightweight magnesium, the start up inertia of the spool is extremely low. This means more energy from the cast is used in projecting the lure. These spools also feature a large arbor so that the mass of the spool is closer to the spool's rim, allowing the spool to spin longer. Magnesium is highly corrosive in saltwater, so use of a reel using magnesium in saltwater or brackish water will void the reel's warranty.
Magnumlite is a revolutionary new lightweight aluminium used to construct our light weight spinning reel spools. This material is 30% lighter than CI4! The reduction in weight is felt by the angler when cranking as it produces an unmistakable silky feeling.
Reels equipped with Manual Bail Trip do not have an auto trip mechanism and the bails must be closed manually. This feature brings added line control during freespool that is imperative to big game-seeking saltwater anglers.
On wide spool reels with a non-disengaging levelwind system, the levelwind remains engaged during the cast allowing the levelwind to track back and forth with the line as it flows off of the spool. This eliminates the drastic line angles caused by a disengaging levelwind system that can cause extreme friction which lead to short casts or frustrating backlashes. By doing this we have increased the efficiency of the cast, allowing more distance with less effort.
One Piece Bail allows the line to travel unimpeded to the line roller. Its seamless design reduces friction and reduces the chance of tangles or cuts to the bail arm.
P3 stands for Power - Precision - Performance. Utmost performance is the end result of ultra-efficient drive trains, tight tolerances and superior line lay systems.
Working on the same principles used to develop P3, but with an AR-C spool, playless handle and a new designed body with rear protector. Shimano P4 stands for Power, Precision, Performance and Pleasure and combines uncompromising quality with mid-priced affordability.
Using a special cold forged aluminium drive gear and a hardened brass pinion gear, reels equipped with the Paladin Gear Durability Enhancement will retain their out-of-thebox smoothness much longer than ever before. In fact, testing has shown that this combination of metals is more durable than an all-stainless steel drive-train while maintaining the smoothness that Shimano is famous for.
Aluminum offers the ideal housing to protect the precision interior from a severe exterior environment. The result is an extremely rigid and tough body that supports the power required to fight monster fish.
Line twist arising from repeated casting and retrieving is reduced by as much as 50% on reels equipped with the Power Roller line twist reduction system. Power Roller's special grooved design assures the line will be wrapped on the spool to minimize unwanted loops and twists during the cast.
Unique spool lip design reduces casting friction as line leaves the spool as well as reducing line-slap on rod guides (also known as AR-C spool). One-piece bail wire allows line to travel unimpeded and smoothly to line roller.
For easy and fast one-handed casts, the line and trigger self-center and are within easy grasp of the angler's index finger.
By recessing the reel foot further into the frame, the reel sits lower in the reel seat. This allows for a much more palmable feel when the reel is mounted on a rod than traditional round reel designs. Not only does it increase the comfort level, but because of its lower profile in the reel seat it makes the reel much more maneuverable with casting styles such as underhand and roll casts.
These shielded A-RB bearings use either a rubber shield or stainless steel shield (depending on bearing size) for the ultimate in corrosion resistance and contaminant protection.
This feature allows the angler to disengage the anti-reverse function enabling the reel to be cranked backwards.
A spare spool is supplied with the
purchase of reel.
SF was designed to eliminate friction on the spool shaft during the cast. In standard baitcasting reels, when the clutch bar is pressed down, the pinion gear is freed and actually can drag on the spool shaft creating friction that can limit the length of a cast. With SF the pinion gear is supported by a ball bearing so that when the clutch is disengaged in preparation for a cast, the pinion gear and spool shaft are kept in perfect alignment. The result is zero friction upon the spool shaft.
The Super Slow Oscillation system evenly layers the line onto the spool, reducing the gaps between the line wraps that can cause unwanted friction or hang-ups during casting. By laying the line in an extremely tight parallel pattern, when layers of line are wrapped on top of a lower layer of line there are no crevices or gaps for the upper layer to embed itself into. When the bail is open and the reel is cast, the line flows effortlessly off of the spool for a longer cast than found with a traditional oscillation system. Reels with this feature also come with extra spool support washers to optimize the winding shape based upon line diameter (see owner's manual for instructions).
Super Stopper II anti-reverse uses a one-way roller bearing that eliminates back-play. This provides the angler with instant hook setting power.
Infinite adjustability for any type of casting application. Previous SVS only provided 6 different brake settings. New SVS Infinity provides 4-6 settings and an adjustable brake dial to provide a much wider and more precise range for maximum control and consistent brake performance in all conditions.
The titanium coated stainless steel spool lip provides incredible durability with today's braided lines. It also drastically reduces the friction during the cast allowing for smooth, effortless casting distances.
VBS uses centrifugal force rather than magnets to aid in controlling the cast. When turned on, the individual brake weights are forced outward at the beginning of the cast when backlashes most often occur, causing friction that reduces the speed of the spool. Once the spool speed begins to slow, the pressure with which the brake weights contact the raceway lessens, allowing the spool to continue spinning. The result is a much more consistent spool speed that is easier to manage and takes advantage of the reel's maximum casting distance. Settings range from zero weights turned on for true freespool or up to 6 weights turned on for extremely windy conditions and maximum cast control.
Consistent spool speed is achieved by altering the speed of the oscillation cam. This results in an even line lay delivering excellent casting and overall manageability.
Extra teeth on the main gear to enhance line lay.
With the use of rubber gaskets the drag is sealed against intrusion of the elements such as water and dust.
The Wiffle spool design has a spool sporting drilled holes and thinner spool edge creating a greater reduction in the inertia. As spool has less inertia (resistance), the reels has better castability due to the fact that it needs less power to accelerate the spool in casting, and less brake force to control the spool speed.
It’s all about leverage! We’ve repositioned the reel handle closer to the body to increase cranking leverage, rigidity and torque, as found in our new Calcutta D reels.
Shimano’s new XGT7 Graphite is 200% stronger than current graphite using our latest technology for improved rigidity and longevity.
The first lip in the Stella SW proprietary threelipped rubber seal system is designed to keep low pressure water out. Then grease between the second and third lips resists high pressure water while enhancing a smooth rotor rotation. Sealing at the roller clutch is the optimal location to prevent water intrusion.
The adoption of thicker titanium wire dramatically increases the rigidity and impact resistance of the bail. The nature of the metal makes the bail lighter and provides excellent corrosion resistance.
Ultimate toughness was sought for the main gear to withstand the maximum drag needed when tackling offshore pursuits. The difference is obvious; the new main gear is thicker and stronger.
New cold forged aluminum handle has a 35% increase in rigidity vs. previous Stella SW resulting in more power under heavy load. The new one-piece shaft cover incorporates an aluminum outer shell and stainless steel core. This new configuration allows the shaft casing to thoroughly and accurately encase the top of the handle shank, resulting in increased rigidity of the entire handle.
The shape and thickness of the aluminum rotor creates high rigidity that results in more fish fighting power. Increased mass of the aluminum rotor generates more inertia resulting in easier fishing of heavy jigs and high resistance lures.
By placing sealing gaskets in 12 critical locations throughout the rigid aluminium body, we are able to create a water resistant structure that can hold up against the toughest conditions and fish that Mother Nature has to offer.
By supporting the pinion gear on both ends with our SA-RB bearings and integrating a bigger drive gear Shimano increased the gearing efficiency and power. This results in a fishing reel with ultra-light handle rotation; less effort and power giving a perfect rotation even under heavy loads. X-Ship stands for Extra, Smooth & High Power. Utilising a double bearing supported pinion gear configuration as well as increasing the size of the gear, Shimano engineers have achieved an overall smoother operation whilst under load and higher power capability of reels featuring this enhancement. This increases the efficiency of your reel meaning that your reel will stay smoother and perform at its peak for much longer.
Incorporating large diameter drag washers at the base of the spool provides greater drag stability. The result is smooth & consistent drag performance throughout the fight. The new Coil Wave Spring features steady elasticity at any compression level, and little deformation under repeated compression. This results in precise drag adjustments throughout the curve, giving the angler more control at high drag pressure.
